In the early morning hours of August 16, 2021, the city of Seattle was met with the grim discovery of a Black / African American man, Willie James Smith Jr., aged 45, who had been fatally shot at Gas Works Park. His body was found near a ballot drop box by someone passing through the park, a popular spot known for its sweeping views of the city skyline. The discovery was made after police received calls reporting the sound of gunfire in the area around 4:30 a.m.
