In the rugged terrain of Pike County, Kentucky, a 22-year-old man named Simon Combs met a violent end. On January 23, 1901, Combs, a Special Deputy Marshal, was part of a posse that ascended a heavily guarded bluff along Elkhorn Creek. Their objective was to raid an illicit liquor still operating at the home of one of Kentucky's most notorious moonshiners, a man already wanted for the deaths of three other men.
