In the quiet setting of Jessamine County, Kentucky, a dedicated public servant, 50-year-old Deputy Jailer Logan Young, met a tragic and untimely end. His death stemmed from a courageous attempt to uphold the law and protect the community he served. The incident that led to his fatal injuries unfolded on Saturday, December 26, 1908, when he and another deputy responded to a call concerning a mentally ill man who was menacing a family member.
Upon their arrival at the residence, the two
deputies confronted the armed man and attempted to place him under arrest. In a sudden and violent turn of events, the suspect opened fire with a shotgun from behind the cover of his horse. Several of the pellets struck Deputy Young in the face, inflicting a mortal wound. Despite the grievous injury, he succumbed to his wounds the following day, on Sunday, December 27, 1908.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the suspect fled the scene, prompting a search by law enforcement. The individual was apprehended within days of the incident. Following his capture, the man was declared insane and was subsequently committed to an asylum. Deputy Jailer Young was survived by his wife, three daughters, and a brother.
