In the quiet town of Cairo, Georgia, the evening of May 9, 2021, was shattered by the sound of gunshots in the 800 block of 8th Street NW. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered the body of 56-year-old Derrick Lamar Herring, a male resident of the community. He had been fatally shot and was found deceased near the road. The Cairo Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation and requested the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to unravel the circumstances that led to Herring's violent death.
For over a year, investigators diligently followed leads and processed evidence. The first significant break in the case came on October 6, 2022, with the arrest of 18-year-old Christopher Tyreq James, a resident of Cairo. James was taken into custody and formally charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Following his arrest, he was booked into the Grady County Jail as the investigation continued to unfold, with law enforcement indicating that they were still seeking information from the public.
The pursuit of justice for Derrick Herring did not end with the first arrest. Nearly a year later, on September 27, 2023, a second suspect was apprehended. Joshua Jones, who was a juvenile at the time of the shooting, was arrested and also faced charges of murder and aggravated assault. Despite his age at the time of the incident, the decision was made to charge the now 17-year-old as an adult. The case against both suspects will be prosecuted by the South Georgia Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office, marking the next chapter in the lengthy process of seeking closure for Herring's family and the Cairo community.
