In the rugged hills of Pike County, Kentucky, a lawman's life was cut short on a tense Sunday, March 19, 1911. Deputy Sheriff Charles Smith, a 35-year-old male, was part of a posse that ventured to a home on Long Fork. Smith, along with two U.S. Deputy Marshals, was there to serve a warrant and arrest a man who had reportedly escaped from the Virginia Penitentiary.
