Jaquarius 'Cory' Bettison, a 21-year-old male from Grand Rapids, Michigan, was visiting his sister in Louisville, Kentucky, for what was supposed to be a short, three-day trip. On October 2, 2021, while in the Algonquin neighborhood on Moore Court, he was shot. The bullet struck him in the leg, hitting a main artery and causing significant blood loss.
Bettison was rushed to the University of Louisville Hospital.
Despite the initial thought from his family that it might be a survivable 'flesh wound,' the severity of the injury required him to be placed on a ventilator. Tragically, after nearly three weeks of fighting for his life, Jaquarius Cory Bettison was taken off the ventilator and succumbed to his injuries on October 20, 2021. His mother, Shantel Ashley, lamented that he came to Louisville for a brief visit and would be returning to Michigan in a body bag.
The Louisville Metro Police Department's Homicide Unit is actively investigating the shooting. At this time, no suspects have been identified or taken into custody. Family members do not believe that Bettison was the intended target of the shooting, stating that he was new to the area and did not know anyone there. The police have asked for anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward.
