In the spring of 1981, a dark shadow fell over Jefferson County, Kentucky, with the tragic death of 15-year-old Robin Barnes. A young woman with her life ahead of her, she became the first known victim of a man who would cast a pall of fear over the community for the next two years.
On May 18, 1981, Robin was abducted from a neighborhood in Louisville. For three agonizing days, her family and friends waited, hoping for her safe return. Their hopes were shattered when her body was discovered in a wooded area. The investigation would reveal a brutal crime; she had been sexually assaulted and strangled. Her cousin, Kaye Barnes, later recounted the horrific details, stating that Robin had been 'raped, sodomized, and shot in the chest and once under the chin and out the temple,' with a broken left wrist suggesting a struggle to escape.
The community was left in fear as the search for her killer began. It would take two more years and the deaths of two other women, Shannon House and Nancy Bettman, before a suspect was identified. The reign of terror conducted by Beoria Simmons, born on May 17, 1954, finally came to an end due to the bravery of a fourth intended victim. In June 1983, a 16-year-old girl he had abducted managed to escape and provide police with a description that led to his capture.
Following his arrest, Beoria Simmons confessed to the murders of Robin Barnes, Shannon House, and Nancy Bettman. He was a serial killer who targeted women, abducting them at gunpoint before raping and murdering them. The bodies of his victims were often left in public areas, including Iroquois Park in Louisville. In 1985, Simmons was convicted of murder, rape, and four counts of kidnapping and was sentenced to death. However, his sentence was later commuted to life in prison without the possibility of parole in 2010.
