In the early hours of June 25, 2008, a place of work became a scene of unimaginable violence in Henderson, Kentucky. Trisha Mirelez, a 25-year-old female machine operator at Atlantis Plastics, was tragically killed during her shift. The events of that night were set in motion by a fellow employee, 25-year-old Wesley Neal Higdon.
Earlier in the evening, Higdon had been involved in a dispute with his supervisor, Kevin G. Taylor.
The confrontation reportedly stemmed from workplace issues, including Higdon's use of a cell phone and not wearing safety glasses. Following the argument, Taylor was escorting Higdon from the building. Higdon then retrieved a handgun from his vehicle and shot Taylor.
After killing his supervisor, Higdon re-entered the plastics factory and opened fire on his co-workers. Trisha Mirelez, along with Rachael Vasquez, Joshua Hinojosa, and Israel Monroy, were fatally shot. Another co-worker was critically injured in the attack. The senseless act of violence concluded when the gunman, Wesley Neal Higdon, turned the gun on himself, taking his own life at the scene. As the perpetrator died by suicide, no arrests were made in connection with the deadly shooting. The community was left to mourn the sudden and tragic loss of Trisha Mirelez and the other victims of that night.
