Lloyd "Pat" Fitzgerald, a 27-year-old employee of the Burlington Electric and Light Department, vanished from Burlington, Vermont, on October 2, 1972. His disappearance sparked a significant investigation, but initially yielded no answers about his whereabouts.

Months later, on March 4, 1973, a grim discovery was made. Fitzgerald's body was found in a secluded cornfield near the Ethan Allen Homestead in Burlington. He had been fatally shot, and his death was ruled a homicide.
