Shiekhnoor Osman, a 40-year-old Black man, was shot and killed in a Burlington, Vermont apartment on the evening of October 2, 2022. The incident, which marked the fourth homicide in the city that year, contributed to a growing concern over gun violence in the community.
The fatal encounter unfolded at an apartment complex on Pine Street. Witnesses reported that a man forced his way into the residence, entered a bedroom where Osman was with a woman, and shot him multiple times.
The tenant of the apartment later informed police that the alleged shooter had an ongoing dispute, described as a "beef," with Osman and had visited the apartment before.
Police quickly identified a suspect in the shooting as 52-year-old Denroy Dasent. Witnesses to the Pine Street shooting recognized the perpetrator as the same individual involved in a shooting incident in City Hall Park just a few days prior. Dasent was located later that same night after he was suspected of committing a second homicide. Brian K. Billings, 37, was fatally shot at the Swiss Host Motel & Village in the neighboring city of South Burlington, where he lived with his family.
Following the second shooting, Burlington police spotted a vehicle matching the description of the suspect's car driving slowly past the Pine Street apartment complex. A traffic stop was initiated, but Dasent allegedly fled, leading to a high-speed chase that concluded at a waterfront parking lot. After a brief standoff with officers, during which nonlethal rounds were used, Dasent was taken into custody. Authorities reported that he laughed during his arrest and alluded to his involvement in both shootings. Dasent, the co-owner of a Caribbean restaurant, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Shiekhnoor Osman and pleaded not guilty. He was ordered to be held in state prison pending further court proceedings.
