In the late summer of 2012, the life of 20-year-old Cody Lee Bailey of Owensboro, Kentucky, was tragically cut short. On the night of August 2nd, Bailey was at a gathering in Spencer County when a single gunshot ended his life. The young man, a graduate of Owensboro High School with plans to attend Western Kentucky University, was remembered as a friendly and artistic individual who was looking forward to a future in the medical field, art, or business.
The investigation into Bailey's
death quickly led to the arrests of two individuals: 19-year-old Joseph Galloway and a 17-year-old female. According to police reports, Galloway had brought a handgun to the party. It was the 17-year-old, however, who is believed to have fired the weapon, striking Bailey in the chest. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, friends rushed Bailey to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved fatal. Law enforcement later discovered the handgun hidden in a bush outside the hospital.
Both Galloway and the teenage girl were taken into custody and faced multiple charges in connection with the fatal shooting. The incident left a community in mourning and a family grappling with the sudden and violent loss of a young man on the cusp of adulthood. The promising future of Cody Bailey was extinguished in a moment of senseless violence at a summer party.
