In the spring of 2013, the Lexington community was shaken by the untimely death of 18-year-old Patrick Nicholas Puckett, a male student-athlete known for his leadership and compassion. On the evening of May 22, 2013, Puckett was fatally shot at an apartment complex on Ryan Circle. Residents in the building reported hearing loud noises that sounded like a fight before discovering Puckett in the building's doorway.
Emergency services were called, and he was transported to the University of Kentucky Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to a gunshot wound to the torso.
Puckett was a junior at Henry Clay High School, having recently transferred from Bryan Station High School where he was a starting linebacker for the football team. He was remembered by friends, family, and educators as an outgoing and well-liked young man with a promising future. He was known for his dedication to helping others, including new and special-needs students, and his death left a significant void in the community. His passing was mourned by many, highlighting the positive impact he had on those around him during his life.
The investigation into Puckett's death quickly led to a suspect. Ernest Wayne Wheeler III, who was 20 years old at the time, turned himself in to the Lexington police two days after the shooting. According to a detective's testimony, a witness stated that Wheeler and Puckett met in a breezeway of the apartment building just before a shot was heard. The detective also testified that Wheeler later admitted to both the witness and the police that he had shot Puckett after a struggle. Wheeler was subsequently charged with murder, and the case was cleared by his arrest, bringing a measure of resolution to the investigation into the tragic death of Patrick Nicholas Puckett.
