In the winter of 2014, the life of 34-year-old Brian Przybylek, a male resident of Louisville, Kentucky, was tragically cut short. On the evening of January 6th, Przybylek was found shot in a hallway of the Guardian Court apartments near Preston Highway. Despite the arrival of emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The initial investigation by Metro Police pointed to a drug-related robbery as the motive for the fatal shooting.
The authorities acted swiftly, and within a
short period, two suspects were taken into custody. Justen Tandy, who was 19 years old at the time, and a 17-year-old male accomplice were arrested and faced charges of robbery and murder. According to police reports, the duo had allegedly arranged to meet Przybylek under the pretense of a drug transaction with the actual intent of robbing him. A struggle ensued during the encounter, which resulted in Brian Przybylek being shot once.
The legal proceedings that followed brought further distress to Przybylek's grieving family. The 17-year-old suspect was initially placed on house arrest pending his trial, a decision that sparked outrage and disbelief among the victim's loved ones. This controversial release was decided in juvenile court before his case was waived to the circuit court to be tried as an adult. While on house arrest, the teen, later identified as Thomas Biggers, was arrested again on drug trafficking charges after a police search of his apartment uncovered heroin packaged for sale. Justen Tandy, the other suspect, was held on a $1 million bond. The case was scheduled for trial in February of 2015, with a hearing held to determine if the two suspects would be tried together or separately.
