A trip to the Kentucky Derby, a long-held dream, ended in tragedy for 49-year-old Scott Hunter, a male visitor from Toronto, Canada. On the night of May 2, 2015, while walking back to his hotel with a friend after the races, Hunter was accosted in what police described as a random robbery attempt. The encounter, which took place in the Highland Park neighborhood of Louisville, quickly escalated into a fatal struggle.
During the robbery, an altercation ensued, and Hunter was shot multiple
times. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His friend, who was with him, was unharmed but was left with the devastating memory of their dream trip being 'tarnished with blood.' Hunter was remembered fondly by those who knew him as a co-owner of a coffee shop in Toronto and a beloved bartender, described as having a 'heart of gold.'
The investigation into the senseless killing led Louisville Metro Police to three suspects within days: 19-year-old Tyrone Thomas, 20-year-old Fatima Abu-Diab, and her 18-year-old brother, Fahed Abu-Diab. Authorities determined that this trio was responsible for a string of as many as nine robberies in the area over the Derby weekend, targeting people on the streets and in parking lots. Thomas was identified as the shooter, while Fatima Abu-Diab was believed to have driven the getaway car. A fourth individual was also later indicted in connection with the robbery spree.
The three main suspects were charged with murder and multiple counts of robbery. In the end, all three were sentenced for their roles in Scott Hunter's death. Fahed Abu-Diab received a 35-year prison sentence, Tyrone Thomas was sentenced to 30 years, and Fatima Abu-Diab was given a 20-year sentence, bringing a measure of closure to a violent and random crime that cut short a visitor's life.
