In the spring of 2014, the life of 28-year-old Keon Grant, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. On the evening of May 14th, in the vicinity of East 1st Street and Vine Street, Grant was shot. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. First responders found Grant and transported him to Jennie Stuart Medical Center, but he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect.
Eyewitnesses at the scene identified 21-year-old Brandon Demar Smith as the person who shot Grant. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and a few days later, on May 18, Smith turned himself in to the authorities. He was subsequently charged with murder for his alleged involvement in Keon Grant's death and was lodged in the Christian County Jail.
During their investigation, police also arrested another individual, Cory Barnes. Barnes was present at a residence near the scene of the homicide and was questioned by investigators. He initially provided false information, claiming to have been asleep at the time of the shooting and denying that he had seen either Grant or Smith that day. Authorities determined that his statement was untrue, and he was arrested and charged with hindering prosecution or apprehension. The case against Brandon Demar Smith then proceeded through the court system.
