In the Russell neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, a gathering of teenagers on a Saturday evening turned tragic, ending the life of 16-year-old Shavon Ross. On that fateful day, police responded to a call around 6:30 p.m. and found Ross behind a home in the 600 block of S. 24th Street, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another teenager was also injured in the shooting but sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The events leading up to the shooting reportedly began with a dispute among a group of teenagers. This conflict is said to have escalated into a physical fight, culminating in a weapon being drawn and fired. Family and community members believe the violence may have been a continuation of an argument that started at a downtown event called Light Up Louisville. A family spokesperson indicated that Ross appeared to be the intended target due to the nature of her injuries. The area where the shooting occurred was known as a regular hangout spot for local youth, with dozens sometimes congregating there.
In the days following the shooting, the community mourned the loss of the Fairdale High School student, who was remembered by her mother as a 'nice, sweet girl.' The family made a public plea for the person responsible to come forward. Their plea was answered when a 16-year-old male juvenile turned himself in to the police. He was subsequently charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the shooting. The suspect, who was a person of interest early in the investigation, is being held at the Jefferson County Youth Center. His name has not been publicly released as he has not been charged as an adult.
