On a Wednesday morning in Louisville, Kentucky, Mukhtar Ahmad, a 41-year-old Pakistani-American man, was driving on Interstate 71 after dropping his 13-year-old daughter off at school. His journey was tragically cut short in what police have described as a random act of road rage. Another driver, Christopher McCullum, opened fire on Ahmad's black SUV, causing it to crash into a guardrail.
Ahmad was struck by a single gunshot to the torso and was pronounced dead at the scene on February 25, 2015.
Ahmad, a father of three, had immigrated to the United States from Pakistan in 2000. He was a local businessman and co-owned a Dairy Mart with his brother. Those who knew him described him as a hardworking family man who was an integral part of the small, tight-knit Pakistani-American community in Louisville. His sudden and violent death sent shockwaves through the community, leaving his family and friends devastated and searching for answers.
Within hours of the shooting, police located and arrested Christopher McCullum in connection with the crime. He was subsequently charged with murder. Authorities reported that there appeared to be no prior connection between Ahmad and McCullum, and the motive for the shooting was believed to be road rage. McCullum pleaded not guilty in court, where his bond was set at $100,000. The tragic incident left a community grieving the senseless loss of a beloved member.
