In the fading hours of a Sunday evening in Louisville, Kentucky, tragedy struck. On August 16, 2015, a 26-year-old Black male named Mark Wallace Wagner, Jr. was found in the street at the intersection of 24th and Chestnut in the Russell neighborhood. Responders to the scene discovered that Wagner had sustained a devastating gunshot wound to his head.
He was rushed to the University of Louisville Hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, the injuries were too severe. Mark Wagner, Jr. was pronounced dead at 8:35 p.m. that same evening. His death was classified as a homicide, leaving a void in the community and in the lives of those who knew him. A barber by trade at Wags Barber Shop, he was a familiar face to many, known for working alongside his father. His life was cut short, leaving behind a young son and a daughter, as well as his grieving parents and grandparents.
In the wake of the shooting, the Louisville Metro Police Department began their investigation into the murder. However, the initial search for those responsible yielded few leads, and authorities reported having no immediate suspects in custody.
