In the Hallmark neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, a young man's life was tragically cut short on a late March day. Brennan Hayes, a 24-year-old male, was involved in a verbal altercation in the driveway of a home at the corner of Allston Avenue and South 23rd Street on March 28, 2016. The argument escalated, and tragically, ended in gunfire. A witness to the event reported seeing the assailant pull out two guns and shoot Hayes, who had pleaded for his life just moments before.
Brennan, a former student of both Waggener and Jeffersontown High Schools, was a father to two sons, Tahj and Tyree Hayes. He is survived by his father, Will Roberts, three siblings, his grandmothers, and his partner, Malashja Mosley. His family remembers him as a loving and goofy individual who worked in a warehouse.
In the wake of the shooting, the Louisville Metro Police Department began an investigation that led them to 20-year-old Demarcus Briggs. Briggs was arrested and charged with the murder of Brennan Hayes. According to the arrest report, the shooting occurred during an argument between the two men. Hayes's aunt expressed the family's emotional turmoil, grappling with the question of why this happened. She also conveyed a sense of relief that a suspect was apprehended, stating it was a step forward and that the violence had to stop somewhere. Briggs was taken to Metro Corrections and held without bond.
