On a tragic Friday in June of 2016, the life of 32-year-old Jennifer Lynn Downey of Frankfort, Kentucky, was cut short in a violent act that also claimed the life of the elderly woman for whom she was a caregiver. Jennifer, a mother to five children, was found with gunshot wounds on June 17, 2016, at the Pea Ridge Road home of 88-year-old Carolyn Barker, who was also found deceased at the scene from gunshot wounds.
Jennifer had been a dedicated caregiver for Mrs.
Barker for nearly four and a half years. Relatives of Carolyn Barker discovered the two women after being unable to reach her. The initial investigation by the Franklin County Sheriff's Office quickly pointed towards a connection with another death that occurred on the same day.
The suspect in the double homicide was identified as Raymond 'Voin' Barker, the 69-year-old son of Carolyn Barker. In a grim turn of events, his body was found on Washington Street in Frankfort with a single self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities were able to connect the two incidents, concluding that Raymond Barker was responsible for the deaths of his mother and Jennifer.
Following the investigation, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office confirmed the case as a double murder and suicide, and they were not seeking any other suspects in connection with the deaths. The motive for the tragic events was not made clear. The community mourned the loss of Jennifer, remembered as a loving mother, daughter, sister, and aunt.
