In the quiet community of Boxville, Kentucky, the life of 68-year-old Jane Springer, a retired elementary school teacher, came to a tragic end on August 30, 2016. On that day, she and her 73-year-old husband, Garland Springer, were found deceased in their home. The authorities determined that Jane Springer's death was a homicide, an act carried out by her husband, who then took his own life.
The investigation by the Union County Coroner's Office painted a sorrowful picture, describing
the event as a 'mercy killing.' Jane had been battling a highly progressive and debilitating illness that caused her insurmountable pain. It is believed that her suffering prompted her husband of 45 years to end her life before he ended his own. Autopsies confirmed the murder-suicide scenario, and as a result, no arrests were made, with Garland Springer being the sole suspect.
Jane was remembered as a dedicated educator who had retired from Morganfield Elementary School. She was a graduate of the University of Kentucky and had furthered her education at Murray State University. Her husband, Garland, was a retired coal miner. The couple, who had married on January 6, 1971, were survived by their son, Todd. Their funeral services were held together, and they were buried in the Boxville Odd Fellows Cemetery.
