In the late hours of a Sunday evening in Louisville, Kentucky, the life of 36-year-old Tana L. Hillman was tragically cut short in a sudden burst of violence. On September 13, 2020, Tana was a passenger in a car, stopped at the intersection of Poplar Level Road and East Indian Trail. Alongside a male companion, the night took a horrifying turn when a white Jeep pulled up next to their vehicle.
From within the Jeep, an object was thrown into the car occupied by Tana and her friend,
immediately followed by gunfire. In the chaos that ensued, Tana was struck in the head by a bullet, a fatal wound that would claim her life. Her companion was also shot multiple times but survived the ordeal. The assailants sped away from the scene, leaving a wake of devastation and unanswered questions. The surviving witness recounted the terrifying moments to Louisville Metro Police, setting in motion a swift and determined investigation.
The suspects' attempt to escape was short-lived. Police officers quickly located the white Jeep and a pursuit began. The chase ended when the driver of the Jeep, later identified as Marcus Vester, crashed the vehicle into a ditch near an I-264 ramp. Three of the occupants were apprehended at the crash site. Vester himself fled on foot but was captured by officers a few hours later near Central Park.
Four men were ultimately arrested and charged in connection with the senseless killing of Tana Hillman. Zaman Taylor, Steven Curtis, Deron Perkins, and Marcus Vester were all charged with murder, first-degree assault, and tampering with physical evidence. Vester, who had attempted to flee, faced an additional charge of fleeing or evading police. The arrests brought a swift, if incomplete, sense of closure to a community shaken by the violent loss of a woman described by friends as loving, caring, and supportive.
