In the late summer of 2017, the life of Jerome Wadsworth, a 28-year-old Black man from Michigan, came to a tragic and violent end in Lexington, Kentucky. On September 3rd, Wadsworth was discovered in a ditch near the Eastridge Apartments, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. He was rushed to Saint Joseph East Hospital but succumbed to his injuries that same morning.
The initial discovery of his body launched a homicide investigation that would quickly uncover a story of a dispute turned deadly.
The investigation led police to 18-year-old Timothy Ganther Jr., an acquaintance of Wadsworth. The two had been involved in an argument prior to the shooting. Details from court documents would later reveal the grim sequence of events. Wadsworth had traveled from Detroit to Lexington, meeting Ganther at a bus station in Cincinnati. He had brought with him a significant quantity of heroin. After selling some of the drugs together, a confrontation erupted between the two men. Ganther claimed that Wadsworth attempted to take money and drugs from him, leading to a physical struggle. During the altercation, Ganther struck Wadsworth, knocking him to the ground. As Wadsworth attempted to get back up, Ganther fired a single, fatal shot to the back of his head.
Timothy Ganther Jr. was arrested in connection with the murder. In addition to the murder charge, he also faced charges for importing heroin and trafficking in a controlled substance, as he was accused of bringing more than 100 grams of heroin from Ohio to Kentucky with the intent to sell. Despite an initial not guilty plea, court documents indicated that Ganther had admitted to intentionally shooting Wadsworth. Following a trial, a jury found him guilty of murder and the associated drug offenses. For his crimes, Timothy Ganther Jr. was sentenced to 25 years in prison, bringing a close to the legal chapter of a senseless act of violence that cut short the life of Jerome Wadsworth.
