In the early morning hours of a Tuesday in April 2018, the life of 21-year-old Christian Cubert was tragically cut short in Lexington, Kentucky. Cubert was discovered suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the vicinity of an apartment complex at Village Drive and Devonport Drive. He was swiftly transported to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The Fayette County coroner confirmed his death, marking him as the ninth homicide victim in the city that year.
The investigation into the shooting initially left police without any suspects. However, developments in the case soon pointed towards a potential motive and an individual. Witnesses reported that prior to the shooting, a man had been talking about how Cubert had 'snitched' on him. This led authorities to identify 18-year-old Malik Rashawn Nelson as a person of interest.
Following the gathering of evidence and witness statements, an arrest warrant was issued for Nelson on a charge of murder. A tip led Lexington police to the area of Castlewood Park, where Nelson was spotted. After a brief foot pursuit, he was found hiding in the bushes in a backyard on Bryan Avenue and taken into custody. In addition to the murder charge, Nelson also faced charges for trafficking in a controlled substance and a probation violation.
