Justin Vancleff Heilig, a 34-year-old man from Salisbury, North Carolina, was tragically killed on September 30, 2018, in Tampa, Florida. Heilig was found with gunshot and stab wounds on the front porch of a home in the 600 block of South Willow Avenue in the Hyde Park neighborhood. A neighbor heard gunshots around 4:30 a.m. and called the police. Heilig was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The initial investigation by the Tampa Police Department did not suggest that the shooting was random, but no suspects were immediately identified.
The investigation took a significant turn when Tampa Police detectives arrested 25-year-old Melissa McNutt from Brandon, Florida, on October 18, 2018. McNutt was charged with armed robbery and first-degree murder in connection with Heilig's death. Detectives discovered that Heilig and McNutt had met in Ybor City on the night of the murder. Surveillance footage showed Heilig getting into the passenger seat of McNutt's 2015 black Nissan Altima, which matched the description of a dark-colored sedan seen leaving the area after the gunshots were heard. A bloody knife and a Pandora bracelet found near the crime scene further implicated McNutt, as DNA evidence on the bracelet placed her at the scene.
The prosecution alleged that McNutt had been cruising Ybor City looking for a victim when she encountered Heilig. After getting into her car, Heilig was later seen on home surveillance cameras in Hyde Park, severely wounded and seeking help by banging on doors and windows. The investigation revealed that McNutt had both shot and stabbed Heilig before fleeing the scene. McNutt was held in the Hillsborough County Jail without bond as the case proceeded through the legal system.
The case against McNutt highlighted the brutal nature of the crime and the thorough investigative work by the Tampa Police Department. The evidence collected, including the surveillance footage, DNA on the Pandora bracelet, and the recovery of the murder weapon, played a crucial role in building the case against McNutt.
