In the spring of 2018, the life of 19-year-old Devon Guest was cut short in an act of violence that marked another grim statistic in Lexington, Kentucky's growing homicide rate. A Black male, Guest was fatally shot on the evening of Friday, April 6, 2018. The incident unfolded in the 500 block of Michigan Street, a residential area nestled between Georgetown Street and Charles Avenue.
According to police reports, Guest had arranged to meet with a 17-year-old male he knew, along with
another teenager. A brief altercation erupted between them, culminating in the fatal shooting of Guest. Discovered wounded in the street around 7:45 p.m., he was rushed to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, but tragically succumbed to a single gunshot wound. His death was the tenth homicide in the city that year, a figure that had more than doubled compared to the same period in the previous year.
The investigation into Devon Guest's death led to the swift arrest of the 17-year-old individual he had met. Due to his status as a juvenile, the suspect's name was not publicly released by the authorities. He was subsequently charged with the shooting.
