In the early hours of a summer Sunday in Lexington, Kentucky, the life of Kerry Douglas Kenney, a 31-year-old Black male, was tragically cut short. On July 1, 2018, Kenney was discovered deceased in the backseat of a vehicle parked near the intersection of North Broadway and West Short streets. The grim discovery was made at approximately 3:15 a.m., and he was officially pronounced dead at the scene less than an hour later.
An autopsy confirmed that Kenney had been the victim of a shooting, and his death was subsequently ruled a homicide.
Investigators quickly determined that the location where Kerry Douglas Kenney's body was found was not the place where the fatal shooting occurred, adding a layer of complexity to the case. As the Lexington police delved into the investigation, they began interviewing several witnesses to piece together the events that led to his untimely death. The case marked the city's 17th homicide of the year. A native of Paris, Kentucky, Kenney was employed at the Adient Manufacturing Plant in Georgetown and was remembered fondly by his family and friends.
Months after the fatal shooting, a breakthrough in the investigation led police to identify 32-year-old Jermaine Yates as a suspect in connection with Kerry Douglas Kenney's murder. An arrest warrant was issued for Yates, who turned himself in to authorities in October 2018. The case proceeded to trial, where Yates faced charges for his alleged involvement in Kenney's death. However, following the legal proceedings, a jury found Jermaine Yates not guilty of the charges brought against him.
