In the early moments of a cold January morning in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, the life of 20-year-old Corvyan Keante Thomas, Jr. was brought to a violent and tragic end. Just after midnight on January 24, 2019, at a residence on Bethel Street, Thomas was fatally wounded, having suffered multiple gunshots. Another young man, only 19 years old, was also struck by the gunfire, sustaining an injury to his leg but surviving the brutal encounter.
The investigation into the shooting quickly
uncovered a grim motive: a robbery gone horribly wrong. Authorities determined that the perpetrators had intended to steal money and drugs from Thomas and the other individual present. The ensuing police work led to the identification of several suspects involved in the deadly plot. Among them were Shakkory Dashaun Willis, James Joseph Yates, and Lane Dewilton Carter, in addition to three juveniles who were also implicated in the crime.
As the case unfolded, the roles of each individual became clearer. Shakkory Dashaun Willis was identified as the gunman who fired the fatal shots from a 9mm handgun, striking Thomas three times. In March of 2019, a Christian County Grand Jury handed down indictments, formally charging Willis with murder, first-degree burglary, first-degree robbery, and second-degree unlawful transaction with a minor. His alleged accomplices, Yates and Carter, faced charges of first-degree complicity to burglary, first-degree complicity to robbery, and second-degree unlawful transaction with a minor. Willis was subsequently held on a $1 million cash bond as the wheels of justice began to turn for a life cut tragically short.
