In the city of Lexington, Kentucky, a young life was tragically cut short on the evening of November 15, 2019. Bryant D. Gaston, Jr., a 17-year-old Black male, was at a residence on Kingtree Court with two friends when a handgun was present. The circumstances of that evening would irrevocably alter the course of several young lives. A call was made to the police, not with the sounds of a teenage gathering, but with the urgent news that someone had been shot.
Upon their arrival at the
home shortly before 7 p.m., Lexington police officers discovered a somber scene. Bryant D. Gaston, Jr. was found inside the home, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Despite any efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at 8:10 p.m. The community was left to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of a young man, a student at Bryan Station High School who was remembered by those who knew him as funny and caring. His family and friends gathered to mourn their loss and celebrate his life at a funeral service held at Total Grace Baptist Church on November 23, 2019.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to an arrest. It was determined that one of the friends present with Bryant that evening, a 15-year-old male, was responsible for the shooting. This young suspect was taken into custody on the same night of the incident and charged with murder. Due to his status as a minor, his name has not been publicly released.
