In the early morning hours of May 28, 2020, Bruce Edward Trice, a 58-year-old male, was found outside on Augusta Drive in Lexington, Kentucky, with a gunshot wound. Police had responded to a shots-fired call at approximately 1:40 a.m. Trice was transported to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at around 3 a.m.
His death was the second homicide to occur on the same block within a 19-hour period, prompting an investigation into a possible connection between the two fatal shootings.
The investigation revealed a grim connection between Trice's death and the killing of 55-year-old Lowell Anthony Johnson the previous day. Both men were victims of shootings that stemmed from the same violent spree. Authorities identified Nathaniel Kincaid, a minor at the time of the killings, as the perpetrator. Court documents indicated that Trice was the intended target of Kincaid. In his initial attempt to shoot Trice on May 27, Kincaid unintentionally shot and killed Johnson at an apartment building on Augusta Drive. Less than a day later, Kincaid returned to the same location and fatally shot Trice.
In January 2023, Nathaniel Kincaid, then 20 years old, pleaded guilty to amended charges of murder for the death of Bruce Trice and second-degree manslaughter for the death of Lowell Johnson. The plea was the result of felony mediation. Kincaid was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder charge and 10 years for the manslaughter charge, with the sentences to run concurrently. The sentencing hearing was marked by an emotional display of unity as the families of both one of the victims and the shooter embraced and grieved together in the Fayette County courtroom.
