In the early evening of a Wednesday in Lexington, Kentucky, a burst of violence shattered the winter quiet. On February 17, 2021, 17-year-old Markel Allen was found by police officers in the vicinity of 760 Florence Avenue, suffering from a gunshot wound. The young man was rushed to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, but tragically, his life could not be saved.
He was pronounced dead at 9:43 p.m., marking the city's sixth homicide of the year.
Around the same time that Allen was discovered, another teenager, a 19-year-old, arrived at a different local hospital with a gunshot wound that was not life-threatening. The close timing of the two events raised questions for investigators, who began to piece together the circumstances of that violent night. While Allen’s death was officially ruled a homicide, the trail for his killer or killers grew cold, leaving his family and community searching for answers.
Months later, a potential link to the case emerged from an unexpected source. In April 2021, during a court hearing for a separate murder case, a Lexington detective testified that the suspect in that case, Juanyah Clay, had made a statement after his arrest. Clay, who was charged with the murder of 26-year-old Bryan Greene, told police that Markel Allen had been present at the time of Greene's death. Despite this revelation, as of that date, the investigation into Markel Allen's own murder was still ongoing, with no suspects publicly identified or arrests made in his specific case. The connection to another violent crime added a layer of complexity to the investigation, but it did not immediately lead to a resolution in the quest for justice for the slain teenager. To date, there is no publicly available information indicating that an arrest has been made in the murder of Markel Allen.
