In the summer of 2020, the life of 37-year-old Mike Anthony Nellom, a man known for his artistic spirit, was tragically cut short in an act of selfless courage. On July 24th, in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, Nellom witnessed a man assaulting a woman near the Wayside Christian Mission on East Jefferson Street. Without hesitation, he stepped in to help, a decision that would ultimately cost him his life. The assailant, later identified as Theodore Friendly, turned his aggression toward Nellom, fatally shooting him.
Mike, a beloved son, brother, and friend, was remembered by his family as someone who could turn anything into a work of art. He was a member of The Cross Baptist Church, having been baptized there in his youth. His family, while mourning their profound loss, took solace in the heroic nature of his final moments, stating that he 'gave his life to save a life.' He was a man who, even in the face of danger, chose to protect another.
The man responsible for this senseless act of violence, Theodore Friendly, was later arrested and brought to justice. In December 2021, a jury found Friendly guilty of the murder of Michael Nellom. For his crime, the jury recommended a sentence of 25 years in prison, bringing a measure of closure to a community saddened by the loss of a man who was, by all accounts, a hero.
