In the late hours of a Sunday evening in Louisville, Kentucky, the life of 18-year-old Kevon Tyree Dickerson, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On March 21, 2021, at approximately 11 p.m., gunfire erupted in the 500 block of Montana Avenue, an area situated near the University of Louisville campus. When officers from the Louisville Metro Police Department arrived at the scene in the Taylor Berry neighborhood, they discovered Dickerson with a fatal gunshot wound.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting commenced immediately, but law enforcement quickly faced significant hurdles. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the assailants flee the scene heading eastbound, but were unable to provide any detailed descriptions that could lead to their identification. In an effort to generate leads in the case, detectives took the step of obtaining a geofence warrant. This legal tool allowed them to access anonymized location data from Google for all devices that were within a six-block radius of the crime scene during the time of the shooting. This digital canvass encompassed more than 120 homes and businesses.
Despite the use of this technology and the ongoing efforts of the Louisville Metro Police Department's Homicide Unit, the case has grown cold. The geofence warrant, while covering a broad area and numerous individuals, did not yield the information necessary to pinpoint a suspect. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Kevon Dickerson, and the investigation remains open. Authorities continue to encourage anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward as they seek to bring closure to a case that has left a family and a community searching for answers.
