In the autumn of 2014, the life of William 'Chad' Mattingly, a 38-year-old man from Louisville, Kentucky, came to a tragic and abrupt end. On the evening of Tuesday, October 28, 2014, a confrontation with law enforcement in the southern part of the city escalated, resulting in Mattingly's death. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the incident.
According to police, the events unfolded when two Louisville Metro Police officers, Rondall Carpenter and Skylar Graudick, encountered
Mattingly. It was reported that as he was fleeing from the officers, Mattingly fired a weapon at them. In response, both officers returned fire, striking Mattingly and causing fatal injuries. Neither of the officers was harmed during the exchange.
Following the shooting, both Officer Carpenter, who had been with the department since 2009, and Officer Graudick, a member of the force since 2013, were placed on administrative leave. This is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings while the department's Public Integrity Unit conducts an investigation into the incident.
