In the early hours of May 31, 2021, a tragedy unfolded at the 2 Brothers Market in Louisville's Portland neighborhood, forever altering the lives of two men. Inside the convenience store, 36-year-old Jonathan Dupin, a well-known handyman, was shot and critically injured. He was rushed to University Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The initial call to police reported a shooting just before 1 a.m., bringing officers to a scene that would prove to be more complex than it first appeared.
Responding officers found Safwat Ballasi, the 40-year-old co-owner of the market, who claimed to have been in his office at the time of the shooting. He told police he heard the gunshot and discovered Dupin's wounded body. Ballasi also asserted that the store's surveillance system was conveniently not working at the time of the incident. However, investigators soon discovered that the surveillance recorder had been unplugged, and upon reviewing the footage, a different story began to emerge. The video showed both Ballasi and Dupin inside the store, with Ballasi handling a handgun multiple times before a shot was fired, striking Dupin. The recording also captured Ballasi walking toward the surveillance equipment just before the video ended.
This crucial piece of evidence led to the arrest of Safwat Ballasi, who was charged with reckless homicide and tampering with physical evidence. The handgun and the spent shell casing were never recovered from the scene. The investigation revealed that Dupin was an employee of the market and Ballasi was his boss. Despite the initial attempt to mislead the police, the video evidence painted a clear picture of the events that transpired.
In a turn of events that shocked the victim's family, Safwat Ballasi later pleaded guilty to a single count of reckless homicide in December 2022. As part of a plea agreement, the charge of tampering with physical evidence was dismissed. Instead of serving time in prison, Ballasi was sentenced to a three-year supervised diversionary program, where he would report directly to the court. The judge made it clear that any violation of the terms of his supervised release would result in a five-year prison sentence. Ballasi admitted in court that he had recklessly caused Dupin's death by mishandling the firearm in his presence, leading to its accidental discharge.
