In the early morning hours of October 26, 2021, the life of 23-year-old Adrian “Ace” Acree was tragically cut short in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. A graduate of Christian County High School who had attended Western Kentucky University, Acree was found in the roadway on Jones Street near the intersection of Sharpe Street with multiple gunshot wounds. Police had responded to a call around 1:00 a.m.
about a man who had been assaulted.
The investigation into the Black / African American man's death led to the identification of three suspects. Authorities alleged a planned and coordinated effort to lure Acree to his death. According to prosecutors, the motive stemmed from Acree being arrested on drug charges and accusing 25-year-old Cortez Hairston, Jr. of providing information to the police. Hairston reportedly became angry at being labeled a 'rat' and recruited two others, 24-year-old Jaila Sherrod and 23-year-old Dekorian Daniel, to assist in a plot against Acree.
The plan involved Jaila Sherrod, who allegedly established a relationship with Acree and drove him to the predetermined location on Jones Street where Hairston was waiting. Hairston then shot Acree multiple times before fleeing the scene. In April 2022, both Sherrod and Daniel were arrested and charged with complicity to murder for their roles in planning the killing. Shortly after their arrests, Cortez Hairston, Jr. turned himself in to the authorities and was charged with murder and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.
The legal proceedings brought a measure of resolution for Acree's family. Jaila Sherrod eventually pleaded guilty to facilitation of murder and tampering with physical evidence. As part of her plea agreement, she agreed to testify against her co-defendants and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. In August 2025, Dekorian Daniel also pleaded guilty to facilitation to murder and complicity to tampering with physical evidence, receiving a 10-year prison sentence as well. Following a trial in October 2024, a jury found Cortez Hairston Jr. guilty of first-degree murder, and he was subsequently sentenced to 30 years in prison.
