In the late summer evening of August 25, 2022, tragedy struck the Harbor House Christian Center in Henderson, Kentucky, a shelter for men seeking refuge and a new beginning. Among the residents was 44-year-old Chad Holmes, a man who had been celebrating his sobriety and a renewed sense of faith. Friends and fellow residents knew him as a man with a good sense of humor who was excited about the future, including the prospect of getting a new car the very next day.
The peaceful evening was
shattered when gunfire erupted within the shelter's walls. Another resident, 37-year-old Kenneth Gibbs, opened fire on those inside, tragically cutting short the lives of Chad Holmes and 67-year-old Steven Wathen. Two other men were also wounded in the attack. The shooting happened after a prayer service, when Gibbs reportedly went to his car to retrieve a handgun before returning to commit the violent act.
In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement launched a manhunt for Gibbs, who had fled the scene in a white Toyota Prius. He was located and taken into custody by the Henderson Police Department a few hours later near the Hays Boat Ramp. Gibbs was subsequently charged with two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.
The legal proceedings that followed brought a measure of closure to the devastated community. In August 2024, Kenneth Gibbs pleaded guilty to two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder. The following month, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his life incarcerated for the senseless act of violence that claimed the lives of Chad Holmes and Steven Wathen.
