On a September night in 2022, the promising life of Adetokunbo Oluwatomi Okunoye, a 25-year-old Nigerian man, came to a tragic end in Lexington, Kentucky. A recent graduate with a Master's in Business Administration from Xavier University, he was in town visiting friends. The evening was spent at a party on Oxford Circle, an event that would ultimately lead to a fatal confrontation.
Okunoye and his friends had never met Woody LaPierre, a 31-year-old Lexington resident, before that night.
As the party wound down, concern grew when Okunoye and his friends could not locate one of their companions. They eventually found her passed out in the passenger seat of LaPierre's car. Frustration mounted as they tried to figure out how to get their friend from the vehicle so they could leave. When LaPierre returned to his car, an argument broke out. LaPierre would later tell police that Okunoye confronted him and grabbed his arm, making him feel scared.
The verbal dispute escalated tragically when LaPierre pulled out a handgun. He pointed the weapon at Adetokunbo Okunoye's face and fired a single shot. The bullet struck Okunoye in the nose, fatally injuring his brain stem. In the chaotic aftermath, as Okunoye's friends frantically called for help, LaPierre fled the scene. He went home, disposed of the weapon, got rid of his clothes, and turned off his phone before going to sleep.
Woody LaPierre was arrested and charged with murder. During his trial, he admitted to shooting Okunoye but maintained it was an accident. LaPierre testified that he only meant to scare Okunoye, whom he painted as the aggressor, and claimed he was unaware that the gun was loaded. The prosecution argued that Okunoye was unarmed and posed no threat. Ultimately, a jury found LaPierre not guilty of murder but convicted him of the lesser charge of reckless homicide. He was subsequently sentenced to five years in prison.
