Esther Nyambura Muchina-Dobie, a 39-year-old Kenyan woman residing in Savage, Minnesota, was found dead on March 30, 2015. Authorities believe she was the victim of a murder-suicide perpetrated by her husband, Rodney Terrell Dobie, aged 41. The tragic incident occurred at their home on the 9300 Block of 125th Street. Police responded to a welfare call from Muchina's employer after she failed to report for work, which was deemed unusual by her colleagues.
Upon arrival, officers found one
of the garage doors open and the service door between the garage and the home unsecured. Inside the house, they discovered the bodies of Esther and Rodney in a bedroom. The Hennepin County medical examiner's office later confirmed that Esther had died from a gunshot wound to the head, inflicted by a 9mm Glock handgun. Rodney then turned the gun on himself, resulting in his death.
The couple had been living in the residence for about fifteen months and were described by neighbors as keeping to themselves. There had been minimal police activity at their home, with only one previous call related to a barking dog complaint. The couple did not have any children together. The police had to contact Esther's relatives in Kenya to inform them of the incident and to positively identify the bodies.
No arrests were made as the case was ruled a murder-suicide. The local community, particularly the Kenyan diaspora in Minnesota, was deeply affected by the news. A fundraiser was organized to send Esther's body back to Kenya for burial, highlighting the community's support and solidarity during this tragic time.
