On August 10, 2016, 31-year-old Abdullahi Omar Sheikh from Rochester, MN, tragically lost his life in a shooting incident. The incident occurred while Sheikh was driving on 2nd Street Southwest near St. Mary's Hospital. Abdulkadir Omar Mohamed, also 31 years old, was in the back seat of the car handling a handgun when it accidentally discharged. The bullet traveled through the driver seat and struck Sheikh in the upper torso.
The car subsequently veered off the road, coming to a stop after hitting a curb and a utility pole.
Following the incident, the police initially responded to what was reported as a traffic crash. However, upon investigation, it was determined that Sheikh had been fatally shot. Abdulkadir Omar Mohamed was arrested and charged in connection with the shooting. He entered into a plea agreement in December 2016, admitting to a second-degree manslaughter charge. In exchange for his plea, a second-degree murder charge and another felony count were dismissed.
At his sentencing hearing on February 15, 2017, Olmsted County Judge Kathy Wallace sentenced Mohamed to 58 months in prison, with credit for the 190 days he had already spent in jail. The plea agreement and subsequent sentencing concluded the legal proceedings related to the tragic death of Abdullahi Omar Sheikh.
