Abdifatah Ibrahim Mohamed, 22, of St. Paul, was found gravely wounded on June 27, 2018, near 9th Street and 23rd Avenue S. in Minneapolis. He had been shot in the head following an altercation with the suspect. The confrontation escalated when the suspect retrieved a gun from his car and shot Mohamed. Despite being rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center, Mohamed succumbed to his injuries early the next day.
The investigation revealed that the suspect, a 28-year-old Minneapolis man, was
identified through facial-recognition technology. Informants provided the suspect's Instagram account, and a photo from that account was used to confirm his identity. The suspect, who had gang affiliations, fled to Georgia shortly after the shooting.
Court records indicate that the suspect's name was not immediately released to the public. However, the detailed investigation, including video footage from nearby buildings and data from the suspect's cellphones and social media accounts, played a crucial role in identifying him. As of the latest updates, no arrests had been made in connection with Mohamed's death.
