On the evening of February 15, 2019, a 20-year-old Black/African American man named DeShawn McCabe of Minneapolis, Minnesota, traveled to the Crystal Village Apartments in the nearby city of Crystal for what he told his mother was a meeting to purchase an iPhone. Tragically, this arranged meeting in the 3000 block of Sumter Avenue North would be his last. Around 7:45 p.m., police responded to a report of a man down in the parking lot.
