In the early hours of May 3, 2019, the vibrant nightlife of downtown Minneapolis was shattered by gunfire that ended the life of 26-year-old Artrail Tevin Pritchard. A Black/African American man from the neighboring city of St. Paul, Pritchard was in the city's Warehouse District when a dispute between two groups of people violently escalated. The altercation, which took place around 12:20 a.m.
on the 300 block of North 1st Avenue, culminated in at least one person opening fire.
Pritchard was struck by a bullet in the chest. As he lay wounded, a bystander rushed to his aid, attempting to provide help until police and paramedics could arrive. He was quickly transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center, but the single gunshot wound proved to be fatal, and he died a few hours later. Investigators believe that Pritchard was the only person injured in the incident.
In the immediate aftermath, Minneapolis police began an intensive investigation into the shooting. Detectives canvassed the area, which is known for its many bars and restaurants, hoping to find witnesses who could shed light on the events that led to Pritchard's death.
