On the night of March 29, 2021, the vibrant Dinkytown neighborhood of Minneapolis was shattered by the sound of nearly a dozen gunshots. Aries Trayvon Hubbard, a 17-year-old Black male, was fatally wounded in the incident, which unfolded around 11 p.m. outside the Burrito Loco restaurant on 13th Avenue Southeast. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner later confirmed that Hubbard died from a gunshot wound to the torso, and his death was officially ruled a homicide.
When police officers
arrived at the chaotic scene, they discovered Hubbard on the sidewalk with a fatal wound. Another man was also struck by gunfire but was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was expected to survive. Investigators recovered three firearms from the area surrounding the shooting. Shell casings were found in front of Burrito Loco, and a witness reported seeing a male toss a gun near the Kollege Klub, with a third weapon later located near the entrance of that establishment.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Minneapolis Police Department stated that they were not actively seeking any suspects in connection with Hubbard's death and believed there was no ongoing threat to public safety. Officials also clarified that neither of the victims was a student or staff member at the nearby University of Minnesota. To date, no arrests have been publicly announced in the case, which marked the 17th homicide in Minneapolis that year.
