On the evening of September 28, 2019, a vibrant life was tragically cut short in the theater district of downtown Minneapolis. Enzo Santiago Herrera Garcia, a 21-year-old Hispanic male, was walking with his girlfriend near the intersection of 8th Street and Hennepin Avenue when a verbal altercation initiated by occupants of a passing vehicle quickly escalated into a fatal encounter.
The family of Herrera Garcia, who had moved to Minnesota from Mexico when he was just a boy to escape violence, would soon find themselves grappling with a senseless act of aggression that ended their loved one's life.
The dispute began when individuals in a silver vehicle, driven by 23-year-old Varnell Allen, shouted at Herrera Garcia and his girlfriend. After an exchange of words, Allen stopped the car, and he and a passenger, later identified as his cousin Tyler Walker, exited the vehicle. An argument swiftly turned into a physical assault, during which Allen pistol-whipped Herrera Garcia. The confrontation reached its tragic climax when Allen, after dropping and retrieving his handgun, fired a single shot that struck Herrera Garcia in the chest. The assailants then fled the scene in their vehicle, leaving Herrera Garcia critically wounded on the street. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
A witness at the scene was able to record the license plate number of the fleeing vehicle, a crucial piece of evidence that led law enforcement to a residence in South Minneapolis. Varnell Allen was apprehended the following day. Initially denying his involvement, Allen later admitted to his role in the altercation and the shooting. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder. His cousin, Tyler Walker, was also charged with second-degree murder for his part in the incident.
In the months that followed, the legal process brought a measure of justice for the family of Enzo Herrera Garcia. Tyler Walker pleaded guilty to a lesser charge for his role in the murder and was sentenced to 57 months in prison. Varnell Allen, the man who pulled the trigger, also faced the consequences of his actions. The tragic death of Enzo Santiago Herrera Garcia, a hardworking young man with a full life ahead of him, served as a stark reminder of how a fleeting moment of anger can lead to an irreversible loss.
