On the evening of June 21, 2020, a Sunday in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the life of 17-year-old Diontae Rayquan Wallace, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short by gun violence. At around 8:09 p.m., Minneapolis Police responded to reports of gunfire in the vicinity of 30th and Knox Avenue North. Upon arrival, they found Wallace without a pulse.
Emergency medical personnel were able to revive him at the scene before he was transported to North Memorial Hospital.
Despite their efforts, Diontae Rayquan Wallace was pronounced dead at 8:31 p.m. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's office later confirmed that he died from a gunshot wound to the back and officially ruled his death a homicide.
The initial police investigation revealed a harrowing sequence of events. Wallace had been in a car with several other individuals when someone fired shots into the vehicle, striking him. Instead of seeking help, the other occupants of the car drove to the area of 30th and James Avenue, where they removed him from the vehicle and left him behind before driving off. Authorities at the time were still working to pinpoint the exact location of the shooting and to determine if Wallace had been specifically targeted. The Minneapolis Police Department's homicide unit is investigating the case; however, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests made or suspects identified in connection with the death of Diontae Rayquan Wallace.
