On August 13, 2020, Ny'Angleo Amir-Cortez Hodges, a 2-year-old boy from Minneapolis, MN, tragically died after being shot inside an apartment in Brooklyn Park. Initially, police were searching for a 20-year-old man seen running from the Huntington Place apartments, but this lead turned out to be false. Five adults were present in the apartment at the time of the incident, and they provided conflicting statements to investigators.
The gun used in the shooting went missing, adding to the complexity of the investigation.
Further investigation revealed that Ny'Angleo and his 3-year-old brother had found the gun inside the apartment and were playing with it when it accidentally discharged, striking Ny'Angleo in the abdomen. The boy's mother, O'Sheonia Hodges, 20, his grandmother, Sherrillyn Mosley, 57, and his mother's boyfriend, Keyshawn Cosey-Gray, 20, were all arrested in connection with the incident. They were charged with second-degree manslaughter and aiding an offender, respectively.
The three defendants initially denied any knowledge of the shooting or the gun involved. They claimed to have been awakened by the gunshot and found Ny'Angleo mortally wounded. However, their statements were inconsistent, and they were found to have hidden the loaded gun fired by the 3-year-old brother. The Hennepin County Attorney's Office confirmed the charges against the family members, highlighting the tragic circumstances that led to the young boy's death.
