On an otherwise ordinary Thursday afternoon, August 27, 2020, the life of Karl Mitchell Henderson, a 22-year-old Caucasian male, was tragically cut short in his Lino Lakes, Minnesota, home. The quiet of the suburban neighborhood was shattered when his father returned from grocery shopping around 2:30 p.m. to find an unfamiliar black SUV parked in the driveway.
A sense of unease turned to alarm as he entered his house on West Shadow Lake Drive and discovered two strangers, a man and a woman, in his kitchen.
The father confronted the pair, demanding to know who they were and why they were in his house. As he followed them outside, the man uttered a chilling threat, saying something to the effect of, "Your son stole on me," and "I'll take you out, too." The man and woman then quickly fled the scene in their SUV. Rushing back inside, the father made a devastating discovery. He found his son, Karl, downstairs in his bedroom, face down and gravely wounded. First responders were called to the scene, but Karl Henderson had been shot in the abdomen and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the homicide began immediately. Detectives found a 9-millimeter handgun on the floor near Karl's body, which did not belong to anyone in the Henderson family. This weapon became a crucial piece of evidence. DNA testing on the firearm quickly led investigators to a suspect: 43-year-old Nicholas Walter Zielinski of Hermantown. Henderson's father also positively identified Zielinski from a photo lineup as the man he had confronted in his home. Further investigation, aided by neighbors' Ring doorbell footage of the black SUV and cell phone tracking data, identified the woman as Zielinski's 47-year-old sister, Melissa Madelyne Zielinski.
The subsequent arrests of the brother-and-sister duo unraveled the plot. They had planned to rob Karl Henderson, believing he kept a large sum of money in a safe. During the robbery, a struggle ensued. Nicholas Zielinski would later testify that his sister had placed restraints on Henderson, but he broke free and lunged for Nicholas's gun. Nicholas admitted to firing two shots, one of which struck Henderson in the chest. Nicholas Zielinski pleaded guilty to second-degree intentional murder and received a prison sentence of nearly 20 years. His sister, Melissa, was found guilty by a jury of aiding and abetting first-degree intentional murder while committing aggravated robbery. She was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
