On a summer evening in Saint Paul, Minnesota, 26-year-old Black / African American male Parnell Robinson was visiting his girlfriend and her young daughter at their apartment in a public housing complex on Ames Avenue. It was August 3, 2015, and what began as a relaxed evening would tragically end in his death. Robinson was on the front porch, engaged in a lighthearted conversation with a friend who was walking by. He playfully teased his friend about having to walk to the store.
This seemingly innocent remark was overheard and misinterpreted by his girlfriend's neighbor, Lepierre Cortia Carpenter, a 24-year-old man who lived in an adjacent unit.
For reasons that would later be attributed to ongoing tension and arguments on social media, Carpenter perceived Robinson's comment as a personal taunt. Enraged by the perceived slight, Carpenter retrieved a handgun. His sister, present in his apartment at the time, saw him with the weapon and tried to intervene, but he was too agitated to be stopped. He went outside and shot Robinson from behind. After the shooting, Robinson was heard asking "Why?" before he collapsed. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner would later determine that he died from multiple traumatic injuries due to the gunshot wounds.
In the immediate aftermath, Carpenter threw the gun into the yard and briefly went back inside his apartment. When police officers arrived at the chaotic scene, they found Carpenter sitting on a curb nearby. He surrendered without incident, putting his hands up and telling the officers, "it's me." He expressed immediate regret, stating, "I let my rage get the best of me," and inquired about the potential prison time he would face.
Lepierre Cortia Carpenter was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. His bail was set at one million dollars. The investigation revealed the history of animosity between the two men, which had been festering on social media for a couple of months, reportedly over drugs. Despite this, the sudden and extreme violence shocked Robinson's girlfriend and other witnesses. In November 2015, Lepierre Carpenter pleaded guilty to the charge of second-degree murder, accepting responsibility for the fatal shooting that stemmed from a fatal misunderstanding.
