A passion for anything with a motor unexpectedly placed a White Caucasian, 17-year-old male, Nicholas Steven Wayne Enger, in the line of fire during an illegal street race in Minneapolis, Minnesota. On the morning of June 5, 2021, the Cambridge-Isanti High School student was merely a spectator, drawn in by the display of speeding cars. He had pulled over to watch the spectacle on East Lake Street, under the Hiawatha Avenue bridge, when a dispute between participants in the street takeover
erupted into gunfire. A stray bullet struck Nicholas, who was standing outside his vehicle, inflicting a fatal wound. First responders were alerted to the shooting at approximately 1:48 a.m. and rushed him to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he died a short time later.
Nicholas was remembered by family and teachers as a kind individual with a great sense of humor, known for making people laugh and bringing smiles to those he met. His passion was deeply rooted in working on cars and trucks of all kinds. When he wasn't "under the hood," he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending quality time with his family and friends. He was a student deeply committed to his friends, always ready to stand by them, and had built incredible relationships with the staff at his school. His death occurred just as he was about to complete his junior year of high school.
The investigation into the shooting was complicated by a lack of physical evidence, as the bullet that killed Nicholas was not recovered at the scene. This has made the identification of a suspect or suspects heavily reliant on tips from the public. In the months and years following his death, his family has repeatedly pleaded for anyone with information to come forward. Frustrated by the lack of progress in the investigation, his mother organized fundraisers to create a reward for information that could lead to an arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for her son's death. Despite these efforts and the ongoing police investigation, no arrests have been made in the case, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The case remains open and unsolved, leaving a grieving family and community still searching for answers and justice for the young life that was tragically cut short.
